The title “Osteopath” is protected and controlled, in some provinces, by the respective medical regulatory college for physicians and surgeons. If you are concerned about any medical pathology/disease, always consult your physician prior to exploring any manual treatment.

It is most common to have completed a 4-5 year Bachelors, Masters or Diploma degree in Osteopathy. These are the guidelines set by the World Health Organization in 2010. The field is not regulated unfortunately so in Canada individuals can use the title after a weekend course. Where can I go for more information on Osteopathy in British Columbia
Osteopathy BC is a professional association of Osteopathic Practitioners. They work to maintain and promote the highest standard of osteopathic healthcare in British Columbia as well as raise awareness and promoting Osteopathy in BC since 2005. Osteopathy BC is a member of both the Canadian Federation of Osteopaths (CFO) and the Osteopathic International Alliance (OIA). Erin is a student member with Osteopathy BC.
Do Osteopathic practitioners use Craniosacral therapy?
The foundations of Craniosacral therapy have their origins in Osteopathy. Beginning in the early 1900s, the American Osteopath William Garner Sutherland extended Osteopathic principles into the cranial system. He pointed out that this extension was already part of Osteopathy as laid out by its discoverer, Andrew Taylor Still. Sutherland and his students commented that the movement of the cranial mechanism is not limited to the cranial-sacral axis, but can be found throughout the entire body. After Sutherland’s passing, individuals within the Osteopathic community taught cranial-specific techniques as a separate therapy. As osteopathic students Erin and James included cranial sacral techniques in their treatments, they also have training from the Upledger Institute.
